Gilston is a district in the heart of the Gold Coast Hinterland. Settlement generally began with the government legislation opening up the land for selection or settlement here in the 1860s when dairying and timber were traditionally the mainstay of the local economy.
A close knit community, Gilston is a hilly area endowed with plentiful billabongs and streams. Bordered by Numinbah, Gilston residents enjoy a quiet, leafy charm.
The name Gilston was given by a Mr Bryant who kept a small store and named the district after a place of that name in England.
